YGG x Pixels Livestream AMA: The Next Chapter for Guilds Inside Pixels
In the lead-up to the launch of Pixels Chapter 2, Gabby Dizon and FallenCorpsez joined Luke Barwikowski and Heidi Christine in an AMA to discuss how a guild system can change the economy in Pixels.
Pixels is one of the hottest web3 gaming projects in recent memory, skyrocketing to prominence as a leading game on the Ronin network. YGG has long been actively engaged in the farming MMO, with many in the guild playing since its early iterations. Quests in Pixels were then introduced in YGG’s Guild Advancement Program (GAP), where it saw 5,000 players signing up to grow crops, craft items and explore the Pixels city of Terra Villa in GAP Season 4.
On January 24, the YGG and Pixels community hopped on an AMA livestream to talk about the updates coming to Pixels Chapter 2, specifically the addition of guilds and the economy changes that will transform the way players interact in the game. Pixels CEO Luke Barwikowski has previously spoken about integrating a guild system into Pixels, and the two teams have been working closely to make guilds a reality in the Chapter 2 update, giving players more ways to enjoy the game no matter their specialization.
In this livestream, YGG co-founder Gabby Dizon and YGG Game Operations Manager FallenCorpsez joined Luke Barwikowski and Pixels CMO Heidi Christine to talk about the history of guilds and what a guild system will look like in Pixels. They also discussed the implementation of bonding curves, which changes the price of guild memberships, and how players will be more invested in their own plot of land, whether it is an NFT or not.
The following is an excerpt taken from the livestream where Luke talks about potential free memberships for guilds and Gabby highlights how a guild system can incentivize all participants. Watch the full recording on YouTube.
YGG X PIXELS // AMA
FallenCorpsez (45:39): Are you going to be able to whitelist individuals, Luke?
Luke (45:43): Yeah, who knows when it first comes out, but that's the stuff we'll be starting to work on more and more as we move on. If I was to suggest, if we’re going for the minimum viable product, maybe it's going to be a two-person guild, and that's how you do this at the beginning.
Somebody made a really good point about that, too. They brought up a point about how the bonding curve might not be fair for existing guilds if there are, like, a thousand people in this guild. Do the guild members agree on an order and purchase it one by one if there's going to be an increasing price for each guild member? I think what we're going to do here is we're going to give out guilds who join an initial amount of memberships to give away for free.
Gabby (46:37): That makes sense.
Heidi (46:42): This is a question that I thought was a good one here. What's the role of guilds like YGG that they can balance and share incentives to all members with no bias happening or being rigged?
Gabby (46:54): That's a great question. I'll take that. So the thing about YGG is that we are not the ones that are controlling the guild itself. Think of us more like a platform for guilds to be able to form themselves and then do stuff in the game.
A bit of background, we came into Pixels a little over a year ago. We have a program that we call the Guild Advancement Program, which allows people to form guilds that work with the YGG ecosystem and do different kinds of stuff within different games. When we came into Pixels, we worked with Trappers in the Field, TiF, to figure out the game better and figure out what kind of quests really made sense.
It was Vard and the rest that worked with Fallen to make sure that we had quests that made sense inside the game. From there, a lot of different guilds that are associated with YGG have come in. You see NFTXStreet, you see Sando, and then a lot of other guilds. And for us, for example, I don't lead a guild myself. I'm actually a farmer of TiF in the game as well.
And so you're going to see that people are going to be different subguilds that are working towards their own ends. YGG’s role is to organize these guilds on-chain — meaning, with their wallets, they will be able to share resources — and then have them do interesting things and have different game experiences.
I do think that's the biggest difference between how YGG thinks of guilds and how Pixels thinks of guilds. We want these guilds to be permanent entities. A lot of what we think about is how do you take the World of Warcraft guild structure and put that on-chain as a permanent group that is not tied to one game, but instead can do things as the same entity in different games? That's how we think about it. When it comes to a particular game, yeah, I'm just farming.
