YGG TV: How the Blockchain Game Alliance Is Transforming the Gaming Industry with Web3
In this episode of YGG TV, John Sedano and Flavien Defraire of the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA) discuss how the BGA educates the traditional gaming space about web3 technology.
YGG TV is an online show produced by Yield Guild Games (YGG) where community members can tune in to learn more about blockchain gaming, discover the latest games, and stay up to date on activities in the web3 space. John Sedano, YGG’s Community Marketing Manager, spearheads the production of YGG TV episodes, which are released every Thursday at 9 p.m. SGT.
In this episode, John Sedano and Flavien Defraire, Director of Global Development for the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA), discuss how the BGA serves as an open forum that enables individuals and organizations to collaborate and establish best practices for the blockchain gaming industry. Since 2018 the BGA has promoted the adoption of blockchain and the possibilities it brings to games by facilitating the sharing of ideas among leading organizations and builders in the web2 and web3 gaming space.

The Blockchain Game Alliance is on a mission to bridge the gap of Web2 and Web3 gaming! #YGGTV
Sedano (1:58): What are the programs that you guys (the BGA) are most focused on in promoting the adoption of blockchain and web3 games?
Flavien (2:07): The main thing that we do is provide an open forum for individuals and companies to share knowledge, collaborate, create standards together, and establish best practices. Above all, the main benefit of being a member of the BGA is for professionals involved in both blockchain technologies and gaming companies to have a chance to meet and connect with each other. That is something we want to facilitate. Our goal is to provide awareness about what our members are building, and to help promote their work to the gaming industry.
Sedano (2:51): What was the reception of the general community in gaming when you put the BGA together? Did you guys have any challenges, or was it a very inclusive environment?
Flavien (3:04): It truly depends. We are welcoming of every company who would like to work with each other. So, it's easy for us to explain what we do because they understand the value proposition of what we do.
As with the outside gaming industry, you could see lots of parallels with the negative reactions to the free-to-play mobile gaming surge. It's also similar to the backlash from the gaming industry saying that gamers should only be playing on consoles and there is no future with mobile gaming, and casual gamers can't exist. But the numbers in the App Store and Google Play Store tell us otherwise.
It's different when working with our members because it's easy to start a conversation. So our main focus is to educate and reach the traditional gaming industry to explain why blockchain games should matter to them.
So the reception depends, but it is always good to capitalize on the 500 companies we have in the Alliance and to have discussions with organizations outside the BGA on why blockchain, with all its different use cases, can affect games for the better.
Sedano (4:18): It's the healthy conversations that spark the best of ideas. As a collective, what do you see about the future of gaming in general? I'm not just talking about web3 and blockchain games, but web2 as well.
Flavien (4:37): I think we are living in an exciting time. It's just a matter of how we could still talk about games with the help of innovative technologies like blockchain. That should be the narrative of what we tried to do, and gaming should mean having fun first. Before, we had this narrative that blockchain gaming was purely about play-to-earn. That's part of the process, thanks to what the tech could bring to games, but that shouldn't be the focus of why blockchain should be used in gaming. So we tried to bring this education on our side and explain these different drivers for the industry.
