Web3 Mission Possible: How YGG Players Own the Games They Love
Gabby joins Felix Cao to discuss how YGG players develop a sense of ownership of their favorite web3 games through their assets, contributions and the relationships they build within the community.
Throughout the two-year Crypto Winter, YGG continued its mission of connecting players to games and guild communities. Cultivating this ecosystem has given players the opportunity to meaningfully participate in different game economies, while also owning a part of the network they’ve helped build.
YGG’s questing systems, Superquests and the Guild Advancement Program (GAP), have led thousands of players to kickstart their journeys into many games. Today, the Ronin network is seeing 2 million monthly active users, and Pixels has just surpassed 730,000 DAU. The YGG community plays a significant role in these numbers, with the initial Axie Infinity: Origins Superquests doubling their expected sign-ups and the new Pixels Superquest launching with a huge influx of players eager to join.
In this episode of the Mobile Growth Association’s Web3 Mission Possible, host Felix Cao talks to YGG co-founder Gabby Dizon about transitioning casual players into engaged members of the gaming community through YGG’s questing initiatives. They discuss the value of incentivizing participation to attract players and foster long-term engagement, emphasizing digital ownership and YGG’s role in helping new players navigate various web3 ecosystems.
The following is an excerpt taken from the podcast. Gabby and Felix examine how that ownership becomes a way for players to deeply engage in their passion, which gives them a sense of their role as builders within these game economies.

Web3 Mission Possible: How Web3 Is Changing the Gaming Industry
Felix (12:09): Let's say that I'm a brand new person, I come from the web2 gaming world, and I'm just a regular user. But now I'm introduced to Axie Infinity or Big Time or one of the major games. How would you explain to them in terms of, “You have the ability to own your own digital assets”? Why is that important to somebody?
Gabby (12:34): Of course, the gameplay is the hook to get people interested. They have to be interested in the game. But as they go deeper into the economy — for example, they might want to join a guild, join a tournament, join an esports team, become a creator. That means you're kind of going deeper into the community. This is where digital ownership matters. Ownership of tokens or NFTs representing that ecosystem means that you own part of that economy. And the work that you're doing to make the game better, to make the game more popular, is something that contributes to the network of this economy as well.
You see this with the people who are getting more passionate about the game, depending on what their skills are. Some people contribute by being esports players, by being content creators, some by doing work within the community, being a moderator, being a game ambassador, or being a guild leader or guild coordinator. So there are many ways to contribute. And what we've seen is that giving these people ownership over their passion, or part ownership of this network, is something that turbocharges that sense of ownership of people within these games.
Felix (13:51): I definitely agree on that. I think this is the whole sense of having that ownership, and because that's human nature, always wanting to own what it is, your assets that you have. The movement into web3 definitely gives players the opportunity to do that. And as you mentioned too, the community plays such a big role, because that validates that everything is working, that the people are joining forces together to lift the entire, let's say, gaming industry, to the next level and build real authentic relationships with other players as well in the entire ecosystem.
