W3CS: The Evolution of YGG’s Approach to On-chain Reputation
At W3CS, Gabby Dizon and Leah Callon-Butler of Emfarsis discuss how SUPERQUESTS aligns with YGG’s other initiatives around on-chain reputation and its vision to provide opportunities in the Metaverse.
Yield Guild Games (YGG) and YGG Pilipinas brought key members of the industry back to the Philippines on July 14-15, 2023, through the Web3 Community Summit (W3CS). Co-presented by Globe, the Philippines’ leading telecommunications company, and GCrypto, a solution allowing GCash users to buy and sell crypto from their virtual wallet, W3CS was the guild’s first community event since the Philippine Web3 Festival in November 2022.
The Summit was sponsored by NFT factory BreederDAO and web3 social app SingSing, as well as blockchain games GensoKishi Online, MetaCene, and Mighty Action Heroes. With organizations such as XPLA, Chainalysis and MetaverseGo on the speaker lineup, over 2,500 guests watched via livestream and attended in person, including international attendees who traveled from all corners of the world. Amid the crypto winter, the event was an opportunity for the web3 community to reconvene at the epicenter of global web3 adoption and discuss promising developments such as YGG’s SUPERQUESTS, development plans for Web3 Metaversity, and collaborations with leading local fintech companies.
Some representatives from YGG who shared their insights on stage include Luis Buenaventura and Mike Ovecka, and Colin Goltra and Beryl Li through pre-recorded videos, as well as Irene Umar of W3GG (formerly YGG SEA) who flew in from Indonesia. However, what set the tone was the fireside chat, “A Global Perspective on Community,” featuring co-founder Gabby Dizon and Emfarsis Director, Leah Callon-Butler.
The following is an excerpt from Gabby and Leah’s conversation about the state of the web3 community, where they touched on the importance of Asian markets such as China and Korea in establishing the market for free-to-play games, Japan’s universally-adored gaming IPs, and how YGG’s SUPERQUESTS will drive user acquisition and engagement for the guild. Web3 Community Summit
Leah (1:15:43): I want to talk about this idea of web3 identity and on-chain reputation as it’s been such a big focus for YGG recently. Just to dive into that, I heard you mention these concepts on the Animoca Brands podcast, where you talked about them being the key to unlocking a user-owned internet. Can you unpack and help us explain what you mean by that?
Gabby (1:16:13): When it comes to concepts like on-chain reputation — and we're doing this with soulbound token achievements — this doesn't get a lot of focus, because achievements are nontradable. You can't flip them for money, and it takes a while, even in real life, to build a reputation. And these are the things that we're focusing on now. For those that know, we started this program called the Guild Advancement Program (GAP) last year where you play different games, and then you get achievements.
How many here have GAP achievements? See, quite a few people have GAP achievements. And these are what build your reputation in web3, the achievements that are soulbound tokens are attached to your wallet that are owned by you. And they are permanently in your wallet. So now you get to present who you are and what you've done in web3, and I think this is incredibly important. Achievements have always existed in games, we're used to earning achievements in Google Play and Xbox Live. But now, this is part of your reputation. This is part of your on-chain resume that is permanently attached to yourself.
For example, you have Kookoo, who has his own brand as a content creator. People will ask, “Sir Kookoo, what have you actually done in web3?” then Kookoo should be able to show his achievements of what he has done within web3. So I think this concept is incredibly important. And I would encourage everyone to really think about how they are adding to their on-chain reputation, because it allows you to open up to get better deals, better offers, or maybe games will be more excited to welcome you if, for example, you’re a top player from another game in the same genre, or if you're a top content creator. All of these are achievements that can be noted on-chain.
Leah (1:18:03): Yeah, I can see how that ties back to YGG's original vision too, in terms of providing opportunities in the Metaverse. So I guess the Guild Advancement Program has really been the basis to all of this. What plans do you have to expand on the program and develop it further?
Gabby (1:18:21): So we've done three seasons of GAP and Season 4 is coming up. And each time, we've refined it so that we're partnering with different games. We're doing automated checking and minting of achievements now, and we're going deeper and deeper into the achievements. And we're just at the start of creating basically a leveling system based on what work you've done in these different games.
And that leads us to the new product that we're releasing soon — you may have seen that piece on social media. So the next product that we're building is SUPERQUESTS, which is a way to onboard new users into a game and perform quests so that they can learn more about those games. So it's a form of user acquisition. It's also a form of engagement. And you get to interact with different content creators that help you learn about the game. And you also get soulbound token achievements for completing these quests.
