Crypto Town Hall w/ FTX: The State of Play
Piers (28:39): One of the things I'd also love to touch on is what you're seeing on the esports side as well. I know that there's some exciting plans on your front for that. But it would be awesome if you could give an overview because, in particular, I want to jump back to Brooks afterwards with the PlayFi model that I think is super exciting for this.
Gabby (29:00): Yeah, absolutely. One of the major theses that we're working with is that the esports and the guild model are merging and will be like the same thing in the next five years. If you look at what guilds are doing, it's rallying the community together and basically bringing them to certain games, providing support for the different roles that people may play, whether you're a player, part of the guild, a content creator or an esports team.
We also have a very active esports team within YGG that is primarily playing Axie Infinity: Origin now but is also looking at other games that have the ability for esports. I think we have to delve into the biggest difference between traditional Web2 esports and Web3 esports.
We've seen some large companies built within the traditional esports scene covering the largest games in the world. However, a lot of the upside of esports is lost because they don't own anything in the games that they're covering. Like if you're playing a game like Counter-Strike, League of Legends and Fortnite, you can have the best teams in the world but you don't have any upside. That, I feel, is the beauty of Web3 esports.
I'm spending a lot of time with our esports team, training the best people, providing content and bringing more people in the game that the guild itself is invested in as well. And I think this is just a better and more sustainable model, where both the game and the guild work together to make the ecosystem much better. So this is something of a trend that we will see continue for the next few years.
