BitPinas Webcast: Energizing Guilds in the Middle of Winter Through Superquests
YGG GAP Ambassador Kookoo speaks with BitPinas Editor-in-Chief Michael Mislos to discuss gamified learning through Superquests and how it sets up web3 gaming for further growth.
Founded in 2017, BitPinas is the Philippines’ top crypto publication, led by Editor-in-Chief and founder, Michael Mislos. BitPinas is dedicated to fostering pertinent and timely conversations about cryptocurrency in the Philippines through its webcast platform. Notably, the webcast has welcomed prominent guests such as CryptoPH thought leader Luis Buenaventura and Coins.ph CEO Wei Zhou.
In a recent episode, Michael spoke with YGG Guild Advancement Program (GAP) Ambassador, Kookoo, to discuss his role as one of two mentors spearheading the first iteration of Superquests, YGG's latest questing and achievement initiative. Other topics they covered were Kookoo's partnerships with Metasports and Coins.ph, web3 gaming's current emphasis on competitive play, and the role of education in addressing negativity toward web3 gaming. They also tackled why the bear market is the perfect time for players to refine their skills and acquire Metaverse-specific abilities in preparation for the next wave of web3’s expansion.
The following is an excerpt from the webcast, partially translated from Filipino. It details Kookoo's experience working on Superquests — from the preparation process to the key learnings he gained from reintroducing advanced players to the basics. You can listen to the full recording on the BitPinas X page.
BitPinas Webcast: The State of #CryptoPH Gaming in PH Today
Mike (28:07): Kookoo, let’s talk about Superquests. We wanted to discuss this because it’s the latest from YGG. I’d like you to just walk us through how you were approached by YGG when they were developing Superquests. What did you think about it at that time, and why did you agree to become [one of] the first — along with spamandrice — the first [mentors]?
Kookoo (29:41): Initially, I hesitated because I wasn't as proficient in Origins [compared to Axie Classic]. I did know the basics, and I also focused on the basic stuff. Because as soon as I had mastered the basics, I could teach them to anyone who also wanted to learn Origins. Surprisingly, many wanted to learn Origins, and I felt like I was learning alongside them — unlike before [with Classic], when I was ahead of the learning curve, playing Axie and creating content and everything. So much has happened in the space.
The Superquest I did was the first three levels of Axie Infinity. And we tapped Spamandrice — who we all know as a true champion, a YGG Elite who studies every move in playing Axie: Origins. So I discussed the basic stuff, and spam took over the more expert levels. And we’ve combined our expertise to provide the best information to anyone who wants to learn Axie: Origins with Superquests. It’s different from playing Axie directly because you’d get rewards but you wouldn’t have anyone teaching you, whereas with Superquests, you get additional supercharged rewards, you get badges, and you can monitor your progress.
This is what you call gamified learning. I don’t know if you’ve heard of that term before, but it’s really fun to learn when it’s like you’re just playing a game, or you’re playing and learning at the same time. You don’t feel like you’re taking an exam or like you’re studying… And when you combine the two, you get additional rewards.
I’ve also been telling the YGG Product Team that I learned a lot as a content creator. I learned things like creating a script, everything related to content creation. Because, like I said a while ago, I’m not an expert when it comes to [creating content with] a director and a script and everything. But with this one, I had to carefully choose the words that I used and carefully explain [the process] so that people would understand how to play Axie: Origins more easily.
And it’s really hard to teach a new game when you’re used to Classic, or the older version. They say it’s harder to teach someone who already has prior knowledge, because you have to unlearn that stuff to make room for new knowledge… It was challenging to introduce players of Classic to this new game mode of Axie Infinity without alienating them. I’m super happy with the results.
Mike (33:41): Do people have to start with the Kookoo Superquest, or can they jump straight to spam’s Superquest?
Kookoo (34:28): Advanced players can go directly to spam’s Superquest. But if you want to get the badge — because that’s also an important aspect of it, getting to prove that this is something you accomplished — why not go through the basics? [The] basic things are important, after all — and then get those rewards and get the badge, then go straight to the advanced Superquest. It won’t take up too much of your time to learn how to play Origins… Sometimes the basic stuff turns out to be what we need to learn the most.
Mike (35:59): I actually don’t see any other guilds doing something as systematized as this. And in a bear market that’s been hitting a lot of people hard — how important are these kinds of activities to sustain and energize the community that we have?
Kookoo (36:30): YGG excels in envisioning what [the market and the community] need and providing sustainability with gaming projects. We all know about those problems from before, surrounding tokenomics, speculation and regulation. YGG is positioning itself to provide opportunities for those people who want to participate in the Metaverse.
This is the path: that you have a reputation system where you can prove that you have made contributions in the space, and aside from those contributions, you get rewarded. The overview of what YGG is doing is, basically, it’s preparing the community for the next wave or the next run. I’m not sure when that is going to happen. I’m not going to say it’s coming soon. But it’s important to be ready and to have a plan.
During the down market, builders build — so why not do the same? Like they say, plant for the rainy season, so that you'll have something to harvest even when a crisis hits. This is the best time to upskill yourself. This is the best time to collect those achievements and badges. If you have extra time, play with us.
